Welcome. My name is Marci Maheson. I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based appointed over 20 years ago with the intention of providing a comprehensive specialist orthopaedic service in adult hip surgery. My clinical private practice is based at the Spire Hospital Cardiff centred on the management of adult hip conditions including joint replacement surgery. I have been involved in a number of innovative developments over the years including computer guided hip surgery, micro hip replacements and minimally invasive anterior hip replacement surgery.
To date, I have performed over 5,000 posterior hip replacements and over 600 minimally invasive direct anterior approach hip replacements. My current research and teaching interests are in minimally invasive primary hip replacement surgery with a special interest direct anterior approach hip replacement with future application in robotic guided hip surgery.
Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery through the direct anterior approach, which I have developed in my practice is an operation which improves and shortens patient recovery following surgery, it improves the accuracy of implant insertion and has a dislocation rate which is 10 times less than conventional approaches. It was recognised at the prestigious Laing Buisson Independent Awards in November 2015 where it won the Medical Practice Award. Direct anterior hip replacement surgery is combined in my practice with an enhanced recovery after surgery programme (ERAS) allowing patients to be discharged home after an overnight stay following surgery and reducing rehabilitation time by approximately half of conventional hip surgery approaches. This procedure is extremely sought after due to the fast and safe rehabilitation and recovery time compared with conventional approaches.
